Old Friends

By Madeline Loyd, 14, Illinois

We said we’d meet up

Just you and me,

I got all dressed up

You looked so happy.

We walked down the street,

The day was so clear,

I took a step close

Wanting you near.

We parted ways,

You said you’d phone,

I went to my room

You left me alone.

We were such good friends,

I knew you so well,

I knew you’d be there,

Catch me if I fell.

Then we lost touch,

Who would’ve guessed,

I cry in my room,

May you be blessed.

I make up a lot of stories in my head. One of them was about two people who were close friends, and everybody thought they were dating. They fall out of touch very suddenly, despite wanting to stay together.
