Six Feet Under

By Shriya, 14, India

Smothered with jasmines, roses and tulips

Feeling low and singing the blues

The walls of the coffin close in

As death knells start to ring

I remember all my unfinished duties

All the errands I still have to run

Goals to attain

And people to make amends with

I understand I was stubborn, superior and a stickler

I made mistakes

I let my dreams fade right before my eyes

Now I am only repenting and recalling

I spent all my life

Searching for something else

Never appreciating what I had

Until I had nothing at all

I only aspire

To learn to let go

Speak my unspeakable truth without any fear

I want to live my life

One day I swear I am going to take my shot

With gleaming stars

The sky’s the limit

But the abode of the angels awaits

By the crack of dawn

I’ve got to change my doom

If only god could awaken the dead

If only god could awaken the dead

This poem is about a dead person in his tombstone. He wants to come back to life—he remembers all his duties and wants to make amends with the people he has wronged. He realizes he spent his whole life yearning for something else and forgot to be grateful for the things he had. He wants a second chance to live his life to the fullest, but knows that it’s impossible unless God awakens the dead.

Wow… Although I am still alive, I can feel that there are so many things that I do wrong everyday and always wanted to correct them. Hope I live a life that I always wanted.
