Joy in the Dark

By Aarya Munot, 14, India

Winter mist ripples through the grass,

Sending sweet chills down your back.

Beneath all the layers of snow,

There’s much to uncover.

Smiles and grief, joys and despair

The immaculate geometry of snowflakes,

The pristine softness of the snow,

The twinkling ice crystals,

A reminder that even in darkness there is beauty.

Winter sentences an old you to death,

Celebrates the emergence of new you.

Snowballs, skiing, snow-capped pines

Feel the blissful winter,

Hear it in the cackling trees,

Listen to the quivering wind,

Sharply snapping at the leaves!

Breathe in your hot chocolate,

Stride down the path in ear muffs and coats,

Leave your mark in the snow

Freeze the scene in your memory,

Warm the world with your smile.

As winter rolled in, a morbid feeling settled over us all. I penned this poem to show how even in darkness, joy can be found. I wanted to portray how winter is a collection of pretty delicacies and how serene it can be.
