Look How She Grows!

By Lovanna Belle Amé, 19, Colorado

Look how she grows!

Why she does it no one knows.

Science can say this is how seedlings sprout with sun,

But no one knows just why she grows,

Or where this force comes from.

She alone knows her soul,

And the inner strength to push against restraints,

The power of will to expand beyond comfort,

To go past the cocoon of familiar.

She understands that if she grows there is more than what she now holds.

That the good right now could be greater still,

And the best could always be better…

So she grows,

Why and how no one knows,

Only she can say exactly what pushes her to the stars.

I have a Pothos plant. When she started growing I was astonished by how quickly she branched out and grew, and how little water and care she needed. So I wrote this poem, but by the end I couldn’t tell if I had written it for her, or someone else.
