She Felt Loved

Danielle, 14, Illinois

She felt comfort as her mom did her makeup in the bathroom as music played.

She felt pretty as she put on her first homecoming dress and walked down the stairs to see her friends gathered around her in awe.

She felt fulfilled as she sat at a table eating the home-cooked meal her best friend’s mom had made.

She felt content as she took cute pictures with the people she loved and made permanent memories.

She felt wild as she walked into the school late at night into a gym filled with balloons and neon lights.

She felt euphoria as she danced around to loud music without a care in the world.

But overall…

She felt loved.

And nothing could ruin this night.

My first homecoming experience inspired the poem “She Felt Loved.” There were so many strong feelings and emotions that the poem captures when explaining the events before and during homecoming. The main struggle writing this poem was figuring out what type of poem would best describe the feelings, emotions, and overall experience of this event.
