Fragments

By Mahleija Tanner, 18, Spain

I’ve left so many fragments of myself

Behind in the places I love

That now I don’t have enough left

To be in the place that I’m in

By the age of eighteen, I’d lived on three continents, in three countries, in nine houses, with three languages, and in four different schools. Living in this constant state of transition has helped me recognize something in myself and in those around me: so often, I give the parts of myself that fit in the environment that I am in. By the end of the day, I feel as if I am simply a collection of fragments and no longer have enough pieces to just be me.
