A Daily Nightmare

By Julia Choi, 15, CA

No one sees him,

No one hears him.

But he always lives among us

Patiently waiting and waiting.

He’s hungry,

But only at the right time does he hunt.

He awaits that moment

When his target is most vulnerable.

He seeks a specific smell:

A scent of insecurity.

And once he finds it,

He attacks.

Slowly but surely,

He takes control of every aspect of their body.

He paints images into their mind

And whispers, “Be afraid of this world.”

He masks people’s eyes to reality,

So they only see the world he created.

He clings to them,

And never lets them go.

No one can run away from him,

No matter how hard they try.

He exists in their minds.

His name is Fear

I attempted to personify the emotion of fear. I have noticed that because I get scared so easily over trying new things, I tend to block myself from taking different opportunities. While writing this piece, I struggled with how I was going to portray this character.
